Understanding Glare Rating & Why Telbix Lucid and Navarro Pendant Lights Excel

Understanding Glare Rating & Why Telbix Lucid and Navarro Pendant Lights Excel

Some insights from Faith Onder – Sales Manager at Telbix. Onder has a passion for lighting and is extremely knowledgeable, just like the entire team at Telbix, your wholesale lighting supplier.

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again—lighting does more than brighten a room. It shapes how we feel about a space, how it functions, and ultimately how we function in it. One detail that can dramatically impact comfort, yet often gets overlooked, is glare.

You’ve likely experienced it: a light that feels harsh or uncomfortable, especially when viewed directly. Think of standing on white concrete under a beaming sun—that’s glare! It's something good lighting designers work hard to avoid. At Telbix, glare control is always on the design checklist, right alongside creating stylish, contemporary lighting.

What is Glare Rating?

At Telbix, we often refer to it as Visual Comfort, but the most widely used system in architectural lighting is the Unified Glare Rating (UGR).

Visual comfort considers:

  • The brightness of the fitting

  • The background lighting

  • The viewer’s angle of vision

A lower UGR = better visual comfort

  • Ratings below 19 are generally recommended for living spaces, work areas, and open-plan rooms.

  • Ratings above 22 can start to feel uncomfortable, especially in environments where people spend long periods of time.

Put simply, a light with a low glare rating will illuminate a space effectively without shining directly into your eyes or creating harsh contrast.

So, What’s the Big Deal?

Poor glare control isn’t just an aesthetic issue—it affects how people feel in a space. It can cause eye strain, fatigue, and even headaches in poorly lit environments.

Whether it’s a kitchen, workspace, or dining area, lighting should support how the space is used—providing clarity without discomfort.

Low Glare by Design: Lucid & Navaro Pendant Lights

At Telbix, we pay close attention to both form and function. Let's focus on two standout products from our extensive linear pendant light range: Lucid and Navaro. These pendant lights are perfect examples of how thoughtful design leads to better glare control.

Lucid Pendant

A Closer Look at the Lucid Pendant Light

  • Linear design: 1800mm long and narrow, height-adjustable, colour-adjustable, and dimmable—ideal for suspended installation over workstations, counters, boardroom tables, and kitchens.

  • Louvre or baffle system: Internal reflectors or a deep-set LED array (with visible black baffles) direct light downward and shield the source from direct view.

  • Low glare: Designed to reduce UGR for visual comfort in offices, kitchens, or other high-use areas.

  • Architectural finish: Available in timber-look or black, blending performance with interior styling.

Exploring the Navaro Pendant Light

  • Recessed frosted diffuser: Softens brightness and directs light output where it’s needed.

  • Ambient glow: Creates atmosphere with a glare-free finish, even from low viewing angles.

  • Available in 2400mm or 1200mm, both dimmable.

  • 3CCT colour changeable for added versatility.

“We designed the Lucid and Navaro pendant lights to deliver effective lighting that supports everyday living without overwhelming the senses.”
– Faith Onder, Sales Manager at Telbix
